Afternoon Tea with a View: Exploring Edinburgh's Willow Tea Rooms

For years, I had dreamed of visiting the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow, known for their afternoon tea and unique Charles Rennie Mackintosh-style furniture. I was especially envious when my cousin had her hen do there, and I couldn't join. So, imagine my surprise and delight when, on my bus ride home from work, I noticed a sign for The Willow Tea Rooms on Princes Street in Edinburgh. The excitement was real—I could finally visit locally!

The moment I stepped into the Edinburgh branch, I was struck by the beauty of the furniture. The Mackintosh-inspired designs set the scene for a relaxing afternoon tea. Given its prime location in Edinburgh, it’s no surprise the place was bustling with tourists. So it is best to book in advance to guarantee a table.

I was so happy when the staff member sat my friend and I at the window! The view of Edinburgh Castle was stunning, providing a perfect backdrop for our tea.

The afternoon tea itself was lovely. It included a selection of finger sandwiches, a fruit scone each, and one cake of our choice from their display. I opted for the berry cheesecake, while my friend chose the lemon meringue. Additionally, we were served two pieces of shortbread.

While the experience was wonderful, there was one small letdown. I’ve always loved afternoon teas that offer a variety of mini cakes. By the time I finished the sandwiches and scones, I was quite full and struggled to enjoy my full-sized cheesecake. Mini cakes not only look cute, but they also allow you to try a little bit of everything, which I missed here.

The Willow Tea Rooms also have a small shop section. It was filled with Mackintosh-themed gifts, including jewelry, tote bags, and more.
